A Health Diet with Dr. Shamlian

Dr Madlen Shamlian, a Syrian Armenian doctor who specializes in pediatric care, who immigrated to Armenia due to the ongoing violence in Syria, introduced herself and dedicated her lecture, which took place at Aleppo Compatriotic Charitable Organization on March 23, 2018, to Mother’s Day.

This week’s topic was about healthy diet.

The talk began with an emphasis that eating slow and spacing out meals is very important. She mentioned that we should be eating 5 times a day, but the meals/snacks must be spaced out during the day. One big mistake that we tend to make is have one big meal. However, in doing so, we increase our chances of developing coronary diseases.

Dr. Shamlian reiterated that the most important meal of the day, that many people decide to skip, is breakfast. If we have a good breakfast, we will function better throughout the day.

The participants were informed that their meals should consist of proteins, fibers, potassium, antioxidants, Calcium, Vitamin D, Iron, salt, Omega 3, and Zinc. Moreover, Dr. Shamlian noted that a healthy diet is linked to beauty.

“For women who wish to maintain their beauty and slow down the aging process, it is important they maintain a healthy diet,” said Dr. Shamlian.

It is paramount that women over the age of 40 maintain a diet that is high with calcium and vitamin D since they are more prone to develop osteoporosis.

The talk concluded with one last tip to limit our consumption of chips, chocolates, and powdered sugar to a minimum since they are unhealthy and cause the most harm to our bodies.

The free of charge, socio-psychological assistance meetings at Aleppo-NGO provide support to Syrians who went through the war and find themselves experiencing psychological side effects, helping them to recover and become actively involved in the civil life of Armenia.

The meetings take place every Friday at the Aleppo-NGO office. The address is 11 Northern Avenue, -1 floor.
