10 Armenian Women in World History “Socio-psychological Assistance for Syrian-Armenians”

On May 24, 2019, during a meeting for the “Socio-psychological Assistance for Syrian-Armenians” project of Aleppo Compatriotic Charitable Organization, Dzovig Magarian-Baitarian, Co-Founder and Vice President of Aleppo-NGO, gave a presentation on the battle of Sardarabad and the creation of the First Republic of Armenia.

The battle of Sardarabad took place between May 22 and 29 1918, and was fought between regular Armenian military units, and the Ottoman army, following the latter’s invasion of Eastern Armenia. Representatives of all circles of the Armenian nation contributed to the victory of the battle, including women, farmers, intellectuals, clergymen and more. On May 28, after the victory, the First Republic of Armenia was declared independent under the leadership of Aram Manukyan. The Prime Ministers of the First Republic included Hovhannes Kajaznuni, Alexander Khatisian, Hamo Ohanjanyan and lastly, Simon Vratsian. 

During the meeting, Doctor Mayta Chavushian, presented the lives of 10 Armenian women, who played undeniable roles in world history: Saint Shushanik – Daughter of Vardan Mamikonian, Mumtaz Mahal, Alenush Terian, Diana Abgar, Zabel Yesayan, Anita Conti, Zaruhi Kavalchyan, Anna Ter-Vardanyan, Gohar Vardanyan and Taim Saian.

These women played an invaluable role in both Armenian history and world history.

As a reminder, Aleppo-NGO’s  “Social-psychological Assistance to Syrian Refugees” program is organized free of charge. The aim of the meetings is to provide support to those who lived through the conflict in Syria and continue to struggle with psychological side effects. The program’s mission is to assist in survivors’ rehabilitation and help them reintegrate into Armenian civil life.

The meetings feature lectures by priests and various speakers. Meetings take place every Friday, at 16:00, at the Aleppo-NGO office. The address is 11 Northern Avenue, -1 floor (entrance located on Abovyan street).
