Students meet with the SDG Armenia Innovations Lab Team

Raising the awareness about Sustainable development goals (SDGs) among youth is the precondition to ensure we attain them. Hence, with the purpose of introducing the concept of sustainable development, we had invited the representatives of the SDG Armenia Innovations Lab to talk about SDGs, present the activities of the Lab and its different departments, tell them about their achievements, and plans.

Having a mission of mainstreaming the culture of innovation and experimentation in policy-making for sustainable development, the SDG Armenia Innovations Lab is a joint initiative of the Government of Armenia and the United Nations, supported by the UNDP in Armenia. It aims to further unlock Armenia’s development potential and accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2030.

The meeting took place on June 30, with more than 50 youngsters present. Among the participants were young people studying different professions, and the speakers made sure to talk about topics everybody would be curious about. Louise Skarvall, the Liaison officer of the Lab, presented the SDGs in general, the environmental issues, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural resources. She suggested playing Kahoot to make it more interactive and easier to memorize for the auditory.

Ruzannna Baldryan, the UX and Communications officer at SDG Lab talked about the current projects and activities, told about certain experiments they carried out in the past, including the projects that ameliorate citizen-government correspondence, improve maternal health, and the results thereof. She stressed that the Lab applies behavioral experimentation, data science, and design thinking to derive valuable insights for public policy.

Her colleague Vahan Martirosyan from the Data Science Department proceeded to talk about the AI industry innovations and trends, and the future perspectives in that field, ”persuading ” the participants that regardless of the profession, all of them will have to deal and get familiar with data science, sooner or later. The attendants witnessed how it is possible to write a random topic and get an essay derived from internet resources through the AI which was quite exciting. Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing are widely used for the major projects undertaken at the Lab.

We hope this will make those present to research and know more about the SDGs and have their contribution in Armenia’s sustainable development.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The objective was to produce a set of universal goals that meet the urgent environmental, political, and economic challenges facing our world. Achievement of the SDGs requires the partnership of governments, the private sector, civil society, and citizens which is why we, the Bright Future for Youth project team, also make efforts to raise awareness about them among youth and let them understand the importance thereof.
